Hier finden wir auch die fast 2000-jährigen Trümmer des Amphitheaters, des alten Circus der Römer, wo wilde Bestien gegeneinander gehetzt wurden, sehnige Gladiatoren kämpften, antike Helden ihre Kraft gemessen hatten und wo wahr- scheinlich auch verfolgte Christen den wilden Thieren zur Beute hingeworfen wurden. Kein Fremder, der Ungarns Hauptstadt besucht, sollte diese hoch- interessante Stätte altrömischen Lebens im einstigen Pannonien unberücksich- tigt lassen. Für den Verkehr zu und von derselben ist bestens gesorgt. AQUINCUM. — Les ruines de l’ancienne ville romaine «Aquincum» qui s’élevait il ya environ 2000 ans sur la rive droite du Danube, à proximité même de Ö-Buda n’ont, à proprement parler, été mises à découvert qu’à partir de 1878, à la suite de fouilles entreprises sur l’ordre et aux frais du gouvernement hongrois, par une commission archéologique. Aquincum fut détruite après 300 ans d’existence, lors de l’invasion des Huns et des Avares. Ces ruines présentent un grand intérêt notamment l’amphithéâtre de forme ellyptique, où les Romains assistaient aux combats des gladiateurs et au martyr des chrétiens jetés en pâture aux bêtes fauves. On se rend de Budapest à Aquincum, station du chemin de fer d’intéret local Budapest—Szt.-Endré, en une demi-heure environ. This burried Roman settlement is now being excavated, by orders and at the expenses of the Hungarian Government. Therc are the remains of houses, of an amphi- theater, the roman circus, which probably was built some 2000 years ago, and in which sinewy gladiators tried their strength in mortal combat, and where wild beast-baiting was indulged in, with the likely finish of persecuted Christians being thrown to thern as a prey.
